In February of 2016, Slagerman shot his girlfriend, Lacey Kuschel, late at night while she was holding their 5-month-old daughter Aspen. Slagerman says the gun accidentally went off, but Kuschel’s family had doubts about his story.

The judge on Monday accepted a plea bargain that was proposed in February, which kept Slagerman out of prison and resulted in a charge of child endangerment being dropped. Dozens of Kuschel’s friends and family submitted letters to the court, asking the judge not to accept the plea.

Slagerman will be eligible for work release and spend 10 years on probation. If he violates probation, he could spend 48 months in prison.
