ST. PAUL, Minn. - The mother and aunt of a man suspected of fatally shooting a community activist are charged with aiding an offender.

The Hennepin County Attorney's office announced the charges on Wednesday. Investigators say that when 27-year-old Sid Strickland-Green III was charged with the murder of Tyrone Williams in early April, officers went to several addresses looking for him.

Police left a card at the home of Strickland-Green's mother, Sharesha Lavonne Green, on April 8, and a week later, officers spoke with her on the phone looking for her son. According to the county attorney, Green said, "Oh! Not my son! You've ruined my whole psyche," and hung up.

Later, on May 3, when there was a warrant out for her son's arrest, police spoke with Green again. According to the criminal complaint, Green told investigators that she would not tell them where her son was if she knew.

In June, the complaint states that officers found Strickland-Green at his aunt's apartment in St. Paul. His aunt, 38-year-old Theresa Lynn Ansari, told police that he had been in her home for about two weeks. "I knew when Sharesha asked me to let him stay here she was hiding something," she told police, according to the criminal complaint.

Ansari told police that Green had told her that her nephew was wanted for questioning in a murder.

Both women are charged with felony-level aiding an offender to avoid arrest, which carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine. They are scheduled to appear in court Aug. 16.
