Funeral to be held for Sacramento's Stephon Clark
Amid a week of protests in California' capital that has gained national attention, Rev. Al Sharpton will deliver a eulogy at the funeral of Stephon Clark, an unarmed black man that was fatally shot by Sacramento police in his grandmother’s backyard.Officers said they initially thought Clark, 22, had a gun, but he was holding a cellphone. On Tuesday, demonstrators disrupted a city council meeting, and the local legislators did meet Wednesday out of respect for the victim's family and his wake. Protesters also blocked entrances to the Golden 1 Center before the last Sacramento Kings' home games, forcing delays and thousands of fans stranded outside the arena. The NBA team said it was working with local law enforcement ahead of its Thursday game against the Indiana Pacers.
Play ball! It's Opening Day
Baseball is back Thursday, and it comes a little sooner than normal (Not that we’re complaining). For the first time since 1968, Major League Baseball will start the season with every one of its teams scheduled to play on Opening Day — weather permitting.(Nationals-Reds has been rained out). Here’s what to watch in all the matchups — the earliest opening day in history — with the Cubs and Marlins starting the season at 12:40 p.m. ET. There hasn’t been a repeat World Series champion since the 1998-99 New York Yankees, but could it happen this year with the Houston Astros? Our experts say no. Keep an eye on these players this season. Some are due to break out, while others could disappoint.
Pre-trial hearings get underway in Cosby sexual assault retrial
With hearings for pre-trial motions in Bill Cosby's sexual assault retrial slated to being Thursday, prosecutors informed Judge Steven O'Neill this week that former model Janice Dickinson, one of Cosby's most bitter accusers, will be one of five additional women they plan to call to the stand. Prosecutors named Dickinson in a letter made public Wednesday as an appeals court rejected Cosby's bid to challenge O'Neill's decision allowing the women to testify. They are among five dozen women who have publicly accused Cosby of drugging and/or raping them in episodes dating back to the 1960s. Cosby's first trial ended in a mistrial.
Vietnam veterans remembered
National Vietnam War Veterans Day is Thursday, honoring veterans of that war and their families. Its the first anniversary of the day after President Trump signed into law the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 (Obama launched Vietnam War Commemoration in 2012, authorized by Congress). The Department of Defense will conduct a wreath-laying ceremony at the Vietnam "Wall." For years, the Vietnam War was so divisive that many feel it hasn't been talked about or its veterans recognized in the way other wars have.
Watch Americans spacewalk
Two Americans on the International Space Station will perform a 6.5-hour spacewalk on Thursday and you can watch it live. Drew Feustel and Rick Arnold are part of NASA's Expedition 55, in which two spacewalks are planned, and "researchers will study Earth atmospherics, the effects of microgravity on bone marrow, materials’ responses to space environments, and biological samples’ responses to simulated gravity," according to the mission summary. Fun fact: In addition to being a flight engineer, Feustel has also restored 1950s Jaguars.
