SAN FRANCISCO — A man was killed by a falling tree while walking on the Hillside Trail at Muir Woods near San Francisco on Christmas Eve.

The tree fell without warning on top of three people.

A man escaped without injury, a woman was hurt by debris and a third man was completely pinned by the large tree trunk, according to officials.

Bystanders notified park rangers, who activated a 911 system.

First responders treated the woman and transported her to a hospital, but unfortunately the man who was pinned was pronounced dead at the scene.

NBC Bay Area reports that the deceased man was identified as 28-year-old man, Subhradeep Dutta of Minnesota.

The park was open at the time of the incident and reopened the following day, Christmas Day, for holiday hours.

Officials said the tree fell of natural, unknown, causes following a persistent series of winter storms over the last week and a half prior to this incident.
