Plymouth neighborhood voted top 5 for patriotism

The Ferndale North neighborhood was voted one of top 5 most patriotic neighborhoods in the nation. Those people know how to throw a party!

PLYMOUTH, Minn. - The Ferndale North neighborhood in Plymouth has been voted one of the nation's top five most patriotic neighborhoods.

Nextdoor, a neighborhood watch app, was the author of the poll. According to its news release, it says hundreds of guests come every year to celebrate Independence Day.

Wednesday was no different. The corner of Brockton and 8th Ave N was decked out with flags and other red-white-and-blue gear.

"There have been neighbors that have been doing this for decades," Kim Zitur said. "It's a Ferndale North tradition."

The tradition of having a parade around the neighborhood and holding a block-party-style carnival is always a hit with the kids.

"It's a lot of planning," Sharon McCartney said. "We start planning, gosh, six months in advance to get this going."

The kids followed a fire truck along the parade route on their bikes. The neighborhood of 200 or so homes had all the children out, following the truck.

"It's for the kids, it's for the neighborhood," Zitur said. "It will just keep going. The fact that Nextdoor is honoring us for being patriotic, that's a great thing."

Despite the rain, the children still got to enjoy a few minutes of fun. The majority of the kids had a good understanding of what July 4 was all about.

"My husband, he's very patriotic so he likes to remind everybody that today's about freedom and about all the gifts we have just handed down to us."
