FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. — The State Fair felt the Bern Saturday, as the presidential candidate stopped by for two appearances, including an interview in the KARE 11 Barn.
The Vermont populist senator won Minnesota in 2016, and said he's going to go all-out for a repeat on Super Tuesday in 2020.
"I want to thank all the people who supported us four years ago, but we take nothing for granted," Sanders told KARE.
"Four year ago was four years ago, we got a whole bunch of new candidates out there, we’re going to be working as hard as we can. The people of Minnesota know that we are living in an unprecedented moment in American history, that we have a president that for so many reasons is unfit to serve and must not be reelected."
Hundreds of devoted Sanders supporters, many sporting their Bernie shirts, followed him around the fair and broke into chants of "Bernie! Bernie! Bernie!" often.
In fact, Sanders' interview at the KARE barn turned in a defacto rally as Bernie backers cheered him on as he made his way through talking points.
He lamented that debates aren't the best way for Americans to get to know what candidates stand for.
"The DNC has a problem, you got so many candidates, you want to give everyone a fair shot, I do understand that, but we need to need to figure out a process by which candidates can get into depth about the health care crisis, or the climate change crisis, or how we create an economy that works for all people and I don’t know anybody who can do all that in 30 seconds."
Sanders' first stop was a one-hour live radio forum at Minnesota Public Radio's booth, where he covered a wide variety of topics, including gun control.
"I'm going to Kentucky and I'm going to tell Mitch McConnell to allow gun reform to be debated on the Senate floor!"
Sanders' visit came just two days after Sen. Amy Klobuchar brought here presidential campaign to her home state's fair.
Klobuchar told KARE she recommended that Sanders try a cheese curd while at the fair because he's from a dairy state.
When informed of that, Sanders remarked, "Amy said that? I'll have a cheeseburger instead!"
