Prosecutors: Mom head of meth trafficking cell

Perez was arrested in April at the U.S.-Mexico border during a shopping trip.

MINNEAPOLIS - Federal prosecutors allege a 25-year-old mother is the leader of one of the biggest methamphetamine trafficking cells the state has ever seen.

According to court documents, the case against Macrina Perez started in May 2016. That’s when authorities raided a Brooklyn Center home and found 140 pounds of meth. Documents also detail how informants allege Perez was behind an extensive drug shipment and distribution operation. The documents further describe how Perez held a, “high position in an international drug trafficking organization.”

Attorney Gary Wolf talked with KARE 11 on Thursday. He said his client plans on fighting the charges against her. Wolf has successfully lobbied against federal detention and Perez may get early release under GPS monitoring while she awaits trial. Prosecutors fear she may escape prosecution if she's released.

Perez was arrested in April at the U.S.-Mexico border during a shopping trip. She was charged nearly two years ago in a sealed indictment that used information from several informants whose identities are protected by the government.
