MINNEAPOLIS - Smoke and flames filled the skies above Minneapolis early Tuesday afternoon as crews battled a blaze at a Minneapolis recycling operation.

The Minneapolis Fire Department tweeted that the fire was on the 1800 block of 2nd Street North, an address that corresponds to Northern Metal Recycling. MnDOT cameras at I-94 and Broadway show thick black smoke pouring from the building. Crews had only just arrived when a second alarm was called.

Firefighters immediately assumed a defensive position, as the fire was already too large to attack from an interior position. Damage appears extensive from Sky 11.

The Minneapolis Fire Department said there were no injuries in the fire. The cause is still under investigation.

The exit from I-94 westbound to Broadway was shut down to protect fire crews. Traffic was also shut down along that stretch of Broadway. Both reopened around 1:30 p.m.
