Sex offender released from MSOP moving to Mendota Heights

A court decision earlier this year allowed the discharge of Kirk Fugelseth, a 51-year-old man who admitted abusing 31 children, from the Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP).

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. - A sex offender with a history of child sexual assault will be moving to Mendota Heights, according to police.

A court decision earlier this year allowed the discharge of Kirk Fugelseth, a 51-year-old man who admitted abusing 31 children, from the Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP). The court ruled he no longer needed inpatient treatment.

Fugelseth was civilly committed to MSOP in 2003 as a sexually dangerous person and a sexual psychopathic personality. He requested a provisional discharge 10 years later, according to court documents. Later, he requested a full discharge, and it was granted. He was discharged on April 17, according to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.

According to Mendota Heights Police, Fugelseth's history of sexual contact is with boys and girls ages 7 to 15. He is expected to move to Mendota Heights on or after April 23, but there is no official word on if he has arrived.

A community notification meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Mendota Heights City Council Chambers.

The DOC reminded the public in a fact sheet released last week that Fugelseth has served out his sentence for his crimes. According to court documents, a judicial appeal panel determined that he is no longer dangerous to the public when they approved his release.
