SHAKOPEE, Minn. - Shakopee police are investigating a possible hate crime at the Al-Huda Childcare Center in the Shakopee Town Square strip mall.

Police say someone entered through the back of the building then stole cash and trashed the business.

Surveillance video from a nearby Anytime Fitness shows a tan SUV and a black truck pulling up to the business around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday.

"I have seen groups of people with confederate flags trucks around here and it could coincidentally been those people," said Cody Boegeman, general manage of the Anytime Fitness.

KARE 11 spoke with the owner of Al-Huda Childcare Center. He would not let us inside but police tell us that the suspect or suspects that did this was after more than just money because they vandalized the childcare center.

"We don't have all the facts, " said Jaylani Hussein Executive Director of CAIR Minnesota.

"The community is always concerned especially after what happened in St. Cloud and the Lonsdale sign and may have also raised some tension and anxiety in the community so anytime there is vandalism in the Muslim community we are always worried this could be retaliation or a form of hate crime," said Hussein.

"It's sad not just what is going on in Shakopee but in general in the country so to me it's nonsense and sad when you look at a person and don't see what they are but just the pigment of their skin," said Boegeman.

Prior to Tuesday's crime, police say there have been reports of vandalism to the daycare's playground.
