Between the traffic and the long drive up north, many decide to stay closer to home Memorial Day weekend. If you're one of them, here are a few "Staycation" ideas...

MINNEAPOLIS — If you’re looking to beat the traffic and stay closer to home this Memorial Day weekend, you’re probably looking for a few “Staycation” ideas, well, here they are:

NEW LLAMA EXHIBIT AT MINNESOTA ZOO

-The Llama Trek exhibit opens this weekend. The interactive experience puts visitors right next to llamas and other animals without any walls or barriers. You can literally walk with the llamas and learn about their natural habitat.

GO TO THE BEACH

-The beaches at Lake Wirth and Lake Nokomis open this weekend. Lifeguards will be on duty all three days.


GARDENING

-With a sunny forecast this weekend it’s the perfect time to get caught up on some gardening.

FARMERS MARKETS

-This Memorial Day weekend several farmers markets will be open.

WATER PARKS, POOLS AND WADING POOLS

-This weekend several water parks like the Jim Lupient Water Park in Minneapolis open for the season. You can also check out one of the swimming pools or wading pools that also open this weekend.

SEE A TWINS GAME

-The “best team in baseball” is home the next five days. You can see the Twins at Target Field Friday through Tuesday.

SEE A LYNX GAME

-The Lynx will play at the Target Center Saturday night at 7 p.m.

CHECK OUT A HIP-HOP MUSIC FESTIVAL

-The popular hip-hop music festival Soundset is Sunday night at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The event boasts more than 40 of the music industry’s best rappers.

TAKE A WALK AT A SCENIC SITE

-There are lots of great places to take a walk this weekend, including the Walker Art Center, home of the “Spoon and Cherry.”

Other ideas include checking out a park, a playground, or taking a bike ride, but whatever you do this Memorial Day, make it memorable, it is “Memorial Day" after all.
