Technology in cars can skyrocket repair costs

Safety systems are found behind windshields, bumpers, and side mirrors and can be extremely costly to repair.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Heads up before you buy a car with all the bells and whistles. If you get in a crash - even a minor crash - and your car has built-in safety systems, you could pay thousands of dollars more in repairs.

That's according to new research from AAA. It says safety systems known as ADAS, or advanced driver assistance systems, can mean paying twice or three times as much for repairs than a car without the systems.

The technology is found behind windshields, bumpers, and side mirrors.

AAA says, depending on the make and model of your car, you could pay $2,050 more for repairs for rear radar sensors. Front camera sensors could cost $1,900 more. Side mirror sensors could cost $1,100 more.

If your car has a camera behind the glass, and you need to replace the windshield, it can cost around $1,500. That's about three times the amount to replace the windshield on a car without the technology.

AAA says one in three Americans can't afford an unexpected repair bill of $500. So what can you do?

AAA says to review your insurance policy. Make sure you understand what technology your car has and how much it could cost to repair it. Make sure you have the appropriate coverage and that deductibles are manageable.

If you do need repairs, AAA says most mechanics can replace sensors. However, to restore the system to proper operation, it must be calibrated. That requires special training.

AAA recommends verifying whether your mechanic is able to properly repair and calibrate the damaged systems. You should also ask for proof of the work once it's complete.
