MINNEAPOLIS - Another year, another warning about deep-frying that Thanksgiving day staple.
In a demonstration Monday, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety showed first-hand why deep-frying can be a recipe for disaster, if you're not careful.
The video below shows how quickly major fires can happen -- and to what extent.
If you choose to deep-fry your turkey this year, the DPS offers the following tips:
1. Make sure the fryer is stable. If your fryer tips over or oil spills out, it will cause an instant fire.
2. Do not overfill the fryer with oil. Even a small amount of spilled oil can cause a large fire.
3. Use temperature controls so the oil doesn’t overheat and catch fire.
4. Do not put a frozen or wet turkey into hot oil.
5. Use the fryer outdoors, never in your garage, on your deck or in your kitchen.
6. Never leave the bird unattended.
