Why sports radio host Phil Mackey Loves 'The Bachelorette'

An unexpected "Bachelorette" fan tries to shed some light on the draw...

Why do people love the shows "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette?"

What is it about them that leaves not just women, but men, wanting more?

Well, I went to a man who on paper I never saw as a fan, but who is indeed a giant one.

1500 ESPN radio host Phil Mackey.

“I feel like we should be doing this segment with my face blurred out and my voice disguised,” Mackey said, laughing.

Too bad for him, Breaking The News doesn't have the budget for that.

His declaration will be in focus and perfectly audible.

“I think it’s OK to admit that you don't just eat meat and potatoes and watch football all day, you can dive in over here off to the side with some smutty TV, like 'The Bachelorette' or 'Married at First Sight.' It's OK to express your love for trashy TV mostly women watched until now, I want to lead the charge of Bachelor and Bachelorette fans who are males,” Mackey said, again, with a grin.

I had to ask if he was just a sucker for love.

“I’m a sucker for a good emotional train wreck, that's how I would characterize it,” Mackey said.

For five seasons, the co-host of Mackey and Judd on 1500 ESPN radio, has been a superfan of the Bachelor franchise.

And really, in summation of how a sports guy can love a show that claims to be all about love?

Well, it's the sport of it, really, as it is a show that absolutely is mostly about winners and losers and perhaps hardly about true love.
