BLACKSBURG, Va. — Former Gophers head coach Jerry Kill is joining the Virginia Tech football staff as a special assistant to head coach Justin Fuente.

In a release on the hokiesports.com website, the school said the position was a newly-created role.

"Jerry Kill will serve as a tremendous resource for our football program," Fuente said in the website posting. "Coach Kill possesses over three decades of expertise and will be great addition to our staff. In addition to over 20 years of experience as collegiate and high school head coach, he's served as a coordinator on both sides of the ball. He can dissect the game from virtually every angle and will be able to provide his unique perspective on everything from recruiting, to personnel and facilities. After Coach Kill spent some time with our staff during preseason camp, it was apparent that he possesses a passion for being involved with a football program on a daily basis."

Kill served as Gophers head coach from 2011-2015, and was named Big Ten Coach of the Year following the 2014 season. He most recently served as director of athletics and special assistant to the chancellor at Southern Illinois.

As noted in the VT release, Kill has become a national advocate for people living with epilepsy, while dealing with the condition himself for much of his adult life. He wrote “Chasing Dreams: Living My Life One Yard At A Time” in 2016, telling the story of his career, along with his battles with cancer and epilepsy.
