First state Unified basketball tournament held

Twelve high school teams competed in the inaugural event at Orono High School.

ORONO, Minn. — The first ever Unified State Basketball Tournament in Minnesota was held at Orono High School at their Activities Center. 

The event hosted by Special Olympics Minnesota showcased teams from all over the state. 

The games lasted all day with Shakopee and Roosevelt crowned as the eventual champions. 

Unified Sports is an inclusive program that combines athletes with intellectual disabilities and without intellectual abilities on the same team. 

It’s a movement that has seen exponential growth in the state of Minnesota.
