Gopher swimmer Max McHugh is taking it to the max

Gophers freshman swimmer Max McHugh is hoping to make a splash at the Big 10 Championships later this week in Iowa City.

MINNEAPOLIS — Max McHugh is following in his brother's footsteps as swimmer at the University of Minnesota. Conner is 4 years older than Max and graduated last year.

"My brother was a breaststroker all of his career and I followed him and learned some tips from him," Max said.

Gophers swimming coach Kelly Kremer said, "I think he learned work ethic, maturity and how to be an elite competitive swimmer from Conner."

Those brotherly "tips" are paying off. The freshman breaststroke specialist is ranked sixth in the country in the 100 breaststroke and 15th in the 200 breaststroke.

The 18-year-old is focused right now on the upcoming Big 10 Championships later this week as well as the NCAA Championships in late March. His longterm outlook is on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

"That's in the back of my mind with it being just a year and a half away," he said.

In the meantime, McHugh's hoping to make a big splash with the maroon and gold.
