Lynx to retire Whalen's jersey in June

Lindsay Whalen will forever be the first player in Minnesota Lynx franchise history to have her jersey retired.

MINNEAPOLIS — Lindsay Whalen will forever be the first player in Minnesota Lynx franchise history to have her jersey retired.

On Thursday morning, the team announced that Whalen's #13 will be raised to the rafters Saturday, June 8th. It just so happens the Lynx take on their greatest rival the Los Angeles Sparks that game. The ceremony will take place before tip off.

"I just want to mess with LA one more time," Whalen said.

Whalen played nine of her 15 seasons with the Lynx and won four championships.

"I wouldn't have any of these accolades or honors if it wasn't for all of us sacrificing together and really bonding as a team," Whalen said. "I just happen to be the first one to retire. I'm sure there's going to be a long line of players that are going to be up there with me."

Always humble, the Minnesota native also has her jersey retired with the Gophers and Hutchinson high school.

Whalen is the all-time WNBA leader with 323 wins and currently coaches the Gopher women's basketball team.
