MAHTOMEDI, Minn. – For the fifth consecutive season, the Mahtomedi baseball team is heading to the state tournament.

“The kids are so excited,” said Mahtomedi head coach Rob Garry. “They deserve to be in this situation, they are a very good baseball team.”

The Zephyrs earned the top overall seed in Class 3A after finishing the season 18-4 and winning the Metro East Conference championship. Mahtomedi had an early exit last year after losing to Waconia on a walk-off hit in the opening round of the tournament.

“It’s good fuel to remember what it feels like to come up just short,” said senior catcher Charlie Bartholomew. “We don’t want to be there again, we know what needs to be done.”

Mahtomedi will play Grand Rapids in the quarterfinals Thursday morning at Siebert Field on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
