MINNEAPOLIS — The Timberwolves have reached an agreement with Ryan Saunders to stay on as the team's permanent head coach.

KARE 11 Sports Director Eric Perkins has confirmed a deal is being finalized and an announcement from the team is expected later Monday.

The Athletic's Jon Kraczynski says the 33-year-old Saunders has almost universal support from the Timberwolves locker room, and most importantly, the respect of team owner Glen Taylor, who relied on Ryan's dad Flip to guide the franchise until his death from cancer.

Opting to keep Saunders on would be the first major move by new President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas, who came to the Wolves after a long stint in the front office of the Houston Rockets.

The Timberwolves were 17-25 under Saunders after he took over when Tom Thibodeau was fired in January of 2019.
