Microsoft buys Minneapolis-based Flipgrid

Tech giant Microsoft Corp. has purchased a Minneapolis-based company known as "the Snapchat of learning."

MINNEAPOLIS - Microsoft has acquired Flipgrid, a Minneapolis-based education start-up with an app that lets students record and share videos on specific topics with their classmates.

Terms of the deal, announced Monday, weren't disclosed.

Flipgrid allows educators to start a discussion topic on the social platform. Teachers moderate and control the discussions but students are able to upload short video responses and interact in a non-classroom setting.

"It provides an avenue for students to participate in a way they're more comfortable with," Joey Taralson, VP of Engagement for Flipgrid, told KARE 11 in March.

Today, it has more than 20 million users.

The acquisition comes nearly two years after Microsoft announced a partnership with Flipgrid. The platform already integrates with many Microsoft products.

Microsoft plans to make Flipgrid free of charge. Schools that already have subscriptions will receive prorated refunds, Microsoft said.

Flipgrid was founded in 2015.
