MINNEAPOLIS — One person is dead after the pickup he was driving struck a tree head-on in southeast Minneapolis early Friday.

Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder says squads were dispatched to the intersection of 45th Street East and Cedar Ave. S on reports of a one-vehicle crash just before 5 a.m.

Arriving officers found the driver of the pickup, described as a man in his 30s, trapped behind the wheel with no pulse and not breathing. The driver was pulled from the truck and Minneapolis officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived to take over.

The man was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Elder says a preliminary investigation indicates that drugs and excessive speed may be contributing factors in the crash.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the man's identity once an autopsy is completed and family is notified.
