MINNEAPOLIS — Good news for Minneapolis commuters who use ABC Ramps and Mobility Hubs.

Prices are going down for many commuters. The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the City of Minneapolis announced that people will have more flexibility after restructuring the two carpool programs. This is the first significant change to the program in almost 30 years.

“We asked people who use the ramp what they needed, and they said flexibility," said MnDOT Commissioner Margaret Anderson Kelliher. "Many commuters don’t want to be locked into one mode of travel with monthly contracts."

“We’re excited to be able to give commuters more choice and options in their daily travel.”

Some of the features offered in the updated program include:

  • Changes to the $20 monthly contract rate allow carpools with two or more people commuting from anywhere outside the downtown core. Previously, only commuters driving from the west qualified for the $20 monthly rate. Carpoolers from other areas outside of the western suburbs previously paid $99.
  • New $5 daily carpool rate for anyone entering the ramps with two or more people in the vehicle weekdays between 6-9 a.m. Previously, the carpool discount was for a monthly contract.

“The changes to the carpool program make it more equitable and align better with commuters’ current travel behaviors,” said Lisa Austin, MnDOT ABC Ramps and Mobility Hubs program coordinator. “For the first time, all people who commute into downtown Minneapolis are eligible for the $20 monthly discount carpool contract in the ABC Ramps and Mobility Hubs. For almost 30 years, this benefit was only for commuters coming from the western suburbs. We also introduced a new daily carpool rate, which allows vehicles with two or more people to get a discounted daily rate.”
