St. Paul begins 'hot mix' pothole patching

After temporarily fixing the city's numerous potholes with a cold mix asphalt, a longer-term solution is now road-ready.

ST PAUL, Minn. — Hot mix season is here!

That's likely to be music to the ears of many drivers, as St. Paul starts using "hot mix" to patch the city's numerous potholes.

In a social media post on Tuesday, St. Paul Public Works announced its crews are now using the longer-term road repair material across the city.

"Public Works crews are patching potholes throughout (St. Paul) with hot mix! Cold mix asphalt that is used during the winter is only temporary for patching," the post said.

City officials asked for patience with the process, and noted that crews will begin their work with "arterial high volume streets first."

Drivers across the metro say potholes have been especially bad this season, following numerous freeze-and-thaw cycles in the weather over recent weeks.

During a recent pothole road trip around the Twin Cities, KARE 11's Kent Erdahl said Shepard Road in St. Paul was the worst he'd experienced. The street was filled with so many potholes that the city was forced to temporarily lower the speed limit.

The announcement of the start of "hot mix" patching in St. Paul comes after public works crews and other union employees reached a tentative contract agreement with the city, averting a potential strike.
