Explore with Sven: Hitting the road in Namibia

Before Sven heads out on his trip across Namibia, he's sharing a little bit about what makes this African country so unique.

NAMIBIA - Sven here! I'm on the road and heading into remote parts of Namibia - meaning I'll be out of cell phone and internet range.

But before I left, I wanted to share a little bit about what makes Namibia so unique in Southern Africa.

Namibia is located in the far southwest part of Africa and takes its name from the Namib Desert. It's the world's oldest desert at 55 million years old!

It's not all hot and dry, however. A cold ocean current on its Atlantic coast, called the Benguela Current, brings nutrient rich water up from Antarctica and the only source of vital water in the form of fog.

Where the Namib Desert meets the cold Atlantic creates a "sand sea" - which contains some of the tallest sand dunes in the world at over 1,000 feet high.

On Tuesday, I'll explain more about these impressive sand dunes and some of the interesting features of ancient life there.

I still want to hear from students - so send me your questions about Namibia and the wildlife here! Take a selfie video asking your questions and email it to sunrise@kare11.com or post your video on Instagram using #Sunrisers.
