Explore with Sven: World Chimpanzee Day

Saturday is the first ever World Chimpanzee Day, which raises awareness about protecting and caring for the world's chimps.

On July 14, 1960, Dr. Jane Goodall entered what is now Gombe Stream National Park to begin her groundbreaking study of chimpanzees. Now, 58 years later, July 14, 2018 will mark the first ever World Chimpanzee Day.

The goal is raise awareness about the need to protect and conserve chimps in the wild and in captivity. It also aims to celebrate humans' closest cousin in the animal kingdom.

One of the organizations that spearheaded the efforts to start World Chimpanzee Day was the Jane Goodall Institute. A few months ago, Sven had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Goodall and asked her about the chimp's endangered status.

"In most of the countries where they live, they are highly threatened, endangered," she explained. "The Gombe chimps wouldn't be there if I hadn't gone, and the way that the Jane Goodall Institute works, to conserve chimps in seven African countries, is to work with the local people to improve their lives."
