Explore with Sven: World Giraffe Day

Believe it or not, giraffes are an endangered species.

Thursday is World Giraffe Day today, celebrating one of Africa's most charismatic creatures.

The day is set aside to bring awareness to the endangered species.

Recently, in 2017 a new comprehensive study found there are fewer than 100,000 giraffes in Africa. That's much less than previously thought.

The cause for their decline, like many African animals, is multi-fold. It's related to increased human population and habitat destruction, as well as bush meat trade.

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation is the sole organization that concentrates on giraffes. They are working on numerous projects to try to protect the animal.

The giraffe population has dropped by 40 percent in 30 years, much like other big game species in Africa such as black rhino and elephant.
