There's an 80,000 ton monster lurking in waters around the United States.
It's a sea creature twice the size of Texas...and it's made of plastic garbage.
The frightening part? Almost half of it is from fishing and it's taking a toll on ecosystems. Animals from seals to sharks to fish get tangled and trapped in it.
However, there is good news. It's a problem caused by humans and if we make conscious decisions regarding waste management and recycling, this can be stopped.
Earth Day is less than a month away and this year, the theme deals specifically with plastic waster in our oceans. As with any ecological issue we face today, awareness is the first step toward a solution.
