Lightning triggers 4 house fires in Lakeville

Fire Chief Mike Meyer says damage to two of the homes that caught fire was significant enough that the owners weren't able to stay in them.

LAKEVILLE, Minn. — The storm system that rolled through the Twin Cities metro Tuesday night brought lightning that is blamed for at least four house fires in Lakeville.

Fire Chief Mike Meyer says two of the homes that caught fire were significant enough that the owners weren't able to stay in them, and one will require significant repairs after flames started in a garage area and then jumped to the main living area.

Meyer says all four of Lakeville's fire stations were active in covering the fires, and crews from Apple Valley, Farmington and Burnsville also came to help. At the height of the action between 40 and 50 firefighters were engaged in battling the house fires.

Besides the four structures that started on fire, Chief Meyer says another five were impacted by electrical surges and other problems caused by lightning strikes on or near the homes.
