Report: MN safest state in America

WalletHub compared America's 50 states across 52 key metrics ranging from assaults per capita to unemployment rate to total loss amounts from climate disasters.

June is National Safety Month. With parts of the U.S. recently hit hard by tragedies from wildfires to mass shootings, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2019's Safest States in America.

And good news for those living in Minnesota... We are top of the list in safest places to live.

In order to help families find the most safe and secure places to settle down, WalletHub compared America's 50 states across 52 key metrics. The data set ranges from assaults per capita to unemployment rate to total loss amounts from climate disasters per capita.

The human premise behind the report is simple: Safety is a basic human need. We all require some form of it, such as personal and financial protection, in every part of daily life. But we’re likely to feel more secure in some states than in others.

Again, Minnesota is number one, with Vermont, Maine, Utah and Connecticut rounding out the top five.

Louisiana led the U.S. in the homicide rate, averaging 12.4 per 100,000 people, landing that state at number 49. The only state less safe is Mississippi, according to the WalletHub report. Texas, Arkansas and Florida round out the top five most dangerous states to live.

Here's how Minnesota accumulated it's number one ranking, according to the Wallet Hub survey. (1=Safest; 25=Avg.)

  • 6th – Murders & Non-Negligent Manslaughters per Capita
  • 8th – Assaults per Capita
  • 30th – Loss Amounts from Climate Disasters per Capita
  • 25th – Job Security
  • 23rd – Fatal Occupational Injuries per 100,000 Full-Time Workers
  • 2nd – Fatalities per 100 Million Vehicle Miles of Travel
  • 4th – Share of Uninsured Population
