MAPLEWOOD, Minn. - Sears in Maplewood is closing its doors this summer.

A company spokesperson tells KARE 11 it was a "difficult, but necessary decision." The store will begin its liquidation sale on April 27 with an expected closing date in mid-July.

"We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity, and have accelerated the closing of unprofitable stores as previously announced. This is not an effort solely aimed at cost savings but is part of a strategy we’ have been executing against as many of our larger stores are too big for our needs," Sears spokesperson Howard Riefs told KARE 11.

The estimated number of employees affected is unknown at this time. Sears says associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores.

“It is disappointing to hear that Sears plans to close its Maplewood Mall store. It has been a favorite shopping destination for many in our community for generations. Unfortunately, times and the nature of retail are changing," Maplewood City Manager Melinda Coleman said in a statement. "We are in the process of commissioning a North End Area Study, with the Mall and Health East as our primary partners. The City is exploring ways to expand residential development in the area to help increase walkability to shops and entertainment opportunities at and near the mall."

“We look forward to working with the Maplewood Mall, various business leaders and our community stakeholders, to ensure we’re providing relevant opportunities to shop, dine and play in our city,” Maplewood Mayor Nora Slawik added.
