The photojournalists at KARE 11 have been chosen as the National Press Photographers Station of the year.
The judges who selected the KARE photojournalists also selected Boyd Huppert as the winner of a new award, the NPPA Photojournalism Award for Reporting.
The awards were announced on Friday and recognize the incredibly talented group of photojournalists and reporters that work at KARE 11.
KARE previously won the Station of the Year distinction in 1985, 1995 and 2001.
Television stations from 34 of the nations largest markets compete each year for this prestigious Station of the Year award. The award recognizes a station's photojournalist staff for their consistency in providing outstanding news photography coverage for and about the audience it serves.
The award does not single out one photojournalist, but recognizes the staff as a whole for their high standard of quality in photography and that is unmatched by any other station in their division.
"Having industry peers choose KARE 11 for such a high honor is gratifying for everyone at the station," said John Remes, president and General Manager of KARE 11. "But to have it happen consistently over the years sets the bar very high here and keeps it up there," he added
Reporter Boyd Huppert has been in broadcasting since he was 16, starting as a radio announcer at WEVR in his hometown of River Falls, WI. He majored in journalism and political science at UW-River Falls and started his television career in 1984 at WSAW-TV in Wausau before joining KARE 11 in 1996.
"Boyd is a superb storyteller," said Tom Lindner, vice President and News Director of KARE 11. "His talents, in concert with the KARE 11 photo staff, provide us with the best photojournalism has to offer."
In 2004 Huppert was awarded a national Edward R. Murrow Award, his fourth national Murrow honor.
