ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Minnesota counties say the state is stiffing them on jail costs.
Counties say their costs for jailing short-term state offenders range from $55 to more than $100 a day -- but the state pays only $9 a day.
They say the shortfall is pushing costs onto property taxpayers.
The counties are angling for some help in next year's legislative session, when the state is expected to face a budget deficit.
More than 100 county commissioners brought hundreds of jail jumpsuits to the Capitol steps to highlight the issue.
