ST. PAUL -- The third recent increase in the state gas tax takes effect Wednesday, with a 3-cent per gallon bump.

It stems from a transportation spending plan enacted by the Legislature in February. The money will help pay for bridge repairs and new road construction.

The tax rose by 2 cents in April and another half-cent per gallon in August.

The per-gallon tax will now be 25.5 cents.

Democrats in the Legislature had the help of eight Republicans in overriding a gubernatorial veto on the bill raising the tax.

Along with western Wisconsin, other swing parts of the state are Green Bay and the Fox Valley in the northeast and the suburbs of Milwaukee.
