MINNEAPOLIS -- Instant-runoff voting in Minneapolis has gotten a boost from a Hennepin County District judge.
Judge George McGunnigle has rejected a request from an opposition group, Minnesota Voters Alliance, to stop instant-runoff voting.
In the same ruling, he granted a request from the city and FairVote Minnesota to dismiss the lawsuit trying to stop the case.
The court released the ruling to the media on Wednesday, but it was issued Tuesday.
The lawsuit challenged the constitutionality of the city's instant-runoff voter charter amendment. However, McGunnigle ruled that there wasn't enough evidence to conclude that IRV deprives voters of any rights or privileges.
IRV is an alternative voting method in which voters rank their choices for each office instead of casting just one vote for one candidate in a race.
