Carleton student burns piano in performance
Art was on display at Carleton College in Northfield Thursday night. Student Caitlin Schmid oversaw a performance of what is called "piano burning." It was a remake of a 1968 performance art piece that focuses on setting a piano on fire. Click here to watch video of the piano burning performance. Schmid got the idea after watching a taped performance of the piece in a music class. She says it's the piece that is open to interpretation. "It's a very emotional piece and asthetically its very beautiful," Schmid said. "It's something that's sort of controversial but it has some meaning behind it. Everybody sort of makes their own meaning out of it." By the way the piano was found in the basement of one of the dorms. The college's music department is paying to replace it.
