Harvest day at a Green Isle farm means more fresh produce for local food shelves.
Volunteers from a local non-profit farm called "Hands for Harvest" planted seed potatoes on an acre of donated land last spring.
On Saturday, they started harvesting their crop which is expected to yield more than 10,000 pounds of potatoes. All of it will go to the PRISM Food Shelf in Golden Valley and other food shelves in the metro.
PRISM says it's gotten a lot more produce this year from people who planted recession gardens and then brought in their extra produce.
Hands for Harvest co-founder Travis Dahlke says they hope to expand the farm and the types of crops they plant.
