ELY, Minn. -- An Ely man who was banned from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for terrorizing families in 2007 is in trouble again.

According to a criminal complaint, Barney Lakner and Edward Zupancich led DNR officers on a mile-long chase in early January after they were found snowmobiling illegally in the BWCA. The snowmobile chase over thin ice and open water reached speeds of 80 miles per hour at times.

Lakner is no stranger to law enforcement. He was sentenced to prison time for harassing families camping in the BWCA.

"It's one of those things that you hope the incident that happened in 2007 would have changed the behavior but to be honest, with you I wasn't surprised, some folks take a little longer to learn a lesson than others," said DNR Captain Thomas Provost.

Both men face several charges including fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle.
