Pregnant woman injured in St. Paul hit-and-run

Tamara Ward was crossing Snelling Avenue, near Eleanor Avenue in St. Paul on Friday around 10 p.m. when a vehicle hit her and kept going.

ST PAUL, Minnesota — A St. Paul woman is recovering in the hospital after being hit by a driver and left on the side of the road at 28 weeks pregnant.

Tamara Ward was crossing Snelling Avenue, near Eleanor Avenue in St. Paul on Friday around 10 p.m. when a vehicle hit her and kept going. Tamara, who was crossing the street to her home, was hit right before reaching the curb.

When other drivers did not stop, Tamara called her neighbor who called her boyfriend, Frisco Rice.

"Luckily, he [Frisco] was only four blocks away and he got home and the first thing he sees is my sister laying in the road," recalled Christopher Ward, Tamara's brother. "The first thought through his mind was, 'Is my baby okay? Is she okay?'"

Christopher added, "I was freaking out. That's my younger sister, that's my family right there."

An ambulance rushed her to Regions Hospital where she is now recovering. According to family, Tamara and Frisco's unborn baby, named Elliot, is fine. Tamara is due in May.

"A lot of relief. A lot of relief. That's her first baby," Christopher said.

Christopher said he is not sure how long his sister will be in the hospital but she started physical therapy for her broken leg on Sunday.

Family members said Tamara has three broken bones in her left leg, crushed bones in her face, a broken nose and some injuries above one of her eyes.

According to St. Paul Police Spokesperson Steve Linders, no arrests have been made in this hit-and-run.

"You hear about it all the time and what makes it worse, in my opinion, is the fact that she was pregnant. It's never okay to do a hit-and-run but it's even worse when you're doing it to a pregnant woman who clearly has another body inside of her," Christopher said.

The family is hoping someone will come forward with information that could lead to an arrest.

"All we know is that it's a silver-colored car and some pieces of the bumper broke off and were found in the road," Christopher said.

Anyone with information on this case, should contact St. Paul police.

Tamara's sister-in-law has also set up a GoFundMe page for Tamara, Frisco and the baby to help with medical expenses.
