Curling is a rising sport in Minnesota

Clasen is the General Manager of the club and he says just six years ago it was the only such club in the metro. Now he says there are at least five.

ST. PAUL - There was a time when Scott Clasen remembers the St. Paul Curling Club as being the central location in the Twin Cities for people to curl.

"I am third generation. My grandparents grew up around the St. Paul Curling Club now I’m curling myself,” said Clasen.

Clasen is the General Manager of the club and he says just six years ago it was the only such club in the metro. Now he says there are at least five.

"It’s a lifelong sport. Similar golf you can start at any age and get busy with school activities, go do others things and come back to it later in life," said Clasen.

Some schools like Chaska and Lakeville sponsor curling for high schools at a club level but according to the Minnesota State High School League no high school has curling as a state sanctioned sport.

The Minnesota Curling Association lists at least 20 curling clubs around the state.

Most of which have events open to the public and for those just learning the sport.

"I started at 52. I said can I learn a new sport at 52. One of my mentors was 80 so I said well I got 30 years to curl," said Deborah Snow.

She’s part of the ladies league at the St. Paul Curling Club.
