GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — There's the old saying, home is where the heart is, and here in Minnesota, in winter that means spending a lot of time indoors. To help make that more of a pleasure than something to dread, Shelly Loberg with Explore Edina joined us on KARE 11 News to discuss ways to spruce up your home with the latest home furnishing trends.
Q: WHAT TRENDS WILL MAKE OUR HOUSE A PLACE WE WANT TO COME HOME TO THIS WINTER?
- The furniture retailers I work with say lounge seating is a must have for Minnesotans.
- Sectionals are perfect for long months indoors.
- Whether they’re deep or shallow, having a place where everyone can stretch out and relax has become a really trendy design piece.
- Going along with this lounging trend, recliners that don’t look like recliners are a huge hit!
- They have a thinner profile, yet are still comfortable and relaxing during those cold winter days.
Q: WHY ARE SWIVEL CHAIRS BECOMING POPULAR?
- Homes today have multiple focal points, or open concept designs.
- Swivel chairs allow you to change focal points in your home easily.
- Whether you’re entertaining in the kitchen or playing games in the den, people can easily change direction to stay in-tune with what’s happening.
Q: WHAT ABOUT FABRICS?
- People want fabrics that are beautiful, but also able to be lived on.
- This Kipton sectional from Arhaus for example, is made of 100% polyester with a high abrasion score.
- That means it wears well and doesn't let spills seep in as easily as linen or cotton.
Q: YOU SAY NATURE IS BECOMING POPULAR IN THE HOME TOO. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS?
- There are a couple of trendy ways nature is being incorporated. One is with authentic looking animal prints.
- Adding printed pillows.
- The second part of this trend is pieces that incorporate natural elements.
- Faux greenery like a Fiddle-Leaf Fig Tree, succulents or orchids add color and texture to a space.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR PEOPLE LOOKING TO SPRUCE UP THEIR HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS?
- Understand how you want your space to function. Do you want it to be a place to relax or something else?
- Explore blogs, Pinterest and home furnishing galleries for inspiration
Q: ARE THERE ANY HOME FURNISHING TRENDS THAT ARE FIZZLING OUT?
- “Fast-furniture” or furniture you buy knowing fully well it’s only going to last a few seasons is not what people want anymore.
- What we’ve been seeing is that people want sturdy, built-to-last pieces.
