Fire rages at Eagan recycling facility on Sunday morning

Dakota County dispatchers said the fire was reported just before 5 a.m.

EAGAN, Minn — A fire blazing at an Eagan recycling plant on Sunday morning has been contained, officials said.

Deputy Kip Springer with Eagan Fire told KARE 11 that crews were sent to Gopher Resources at 685 Yankee Doodle Road just before 5 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters from at least 12 neighboring cities assisted in fighting the fire, which reached a full 5th-alarm.

Officials said the fire burned between two roofs and was a labor-intensive operation.

Dep. Springer emphasized that the fire was contained to the roof and no chemicals or products inside the plant burned. Additionally, Gopher Resources has a system to manage wastewater, meaning no runoff or other chemicals should reach any stormwater or lakes near the facility.

The fire department is in contact with state officials to ensure that no chemicals reach any other water systems.

No injuries were reported.

Gopher Resource released a statement saying, in part, that there is no current threat to the public.

"Gopher Resource in Eagan, MN experienced a fire at our facility that began this morning at around 5:00 a.m. and has since been extinguished," the statement reads. "There are no reported injuries. Appropriate state and local emergency response officials were notified of the incident and fire department personnel managed the response.

"Government officials have advised that there is no current threat to the public. In consultation with applicable regulators, we intend to continue monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of our employees and the community.

"We are thankful for the exemplary efforts of the firefighters and other personnel in responding to this situation."

Roads in the area were closed earlier in the day because of smoky conditions but have since reopened.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and officials said they don't believe the fire was set intentionally.

KARE 11 will update this article as more information is made available.
