Police open death investigation after man killed near Lake Street

Officers say a man was shot to death Wednesday night near where people were protesting over the death of George Floyd.

MINNEAPOLIS — Late Wednesday night, the Minneapolis Police Department held a midnight news conference to announce that one man was shot and killed in Minneapolis near where protests were happening over the death of George Floyd.

Police responded to the area of Bloomington Avenue and Lake Street Wednesday night for a report of a stabbing. 

When police arrived, and found the body of a man lying on the sidewalk. Officers say the man was injured, not breathing and had no heartbeat.

Officers began lifesaving measures, and the injured man was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. He was pronounced dead upon arrival of the hospital. Further investigation showed the man had been shot, and not stabbed. 

Minneapolis Police spokesperson John Elder said one man is in custody.

No further information was given about the investigation.

This is the second day of demonstrations following the police-involved death of George Floyd.

Floyd died in police custody Monday night, and bystander video has since shown a Minneapolis police officer with his knee on Floyd's neck as Floyd says repeatedly, "I can't breathe."
