Assistant News Director
Credit: KARE

Nelson Garcia returns to the Twin Cities to serve as the Assistant News Director of KARE 11 News. He spent 18 years at our sister station in Denver, Colorado working as the Education Reporter for 11 years before taking over their feature franchise known as Storytellers. Nelson was then promoted to Director of Reporting before garnering another promotion as Assistant News Director at KUSA in Denver.

Before his 18-year stint in the Mile High City, Nelson worked as a General Assignment reporter and Education Reporter for 5 years at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis. He and his wife, Lisa, are excited to be back in Minnesota where their two daughters were born.

Nelson grew up in the suburbs of Chicago before graduating with a Broadcast Journalism degree from the University of Missouri. He also attended the University of Colorado but spent too much time skiing instead of going to class leading to a transfer.

Nelson has won more than 50 Emmys, Edward R. Murrow Awards, and Associated Press Awards combined for his reporting. He has also been recognized multiple times for his reporting by the National Press Photographers Association. In 2023, Nelson was proud to be part of the team that won the coveted national du-Pont Columbia Award for his work following the devastating Marshall Fire in Colorado.
