SANDWICH GENERATION: Tai Chi helps seniors stay strong, avoid falls

More aging adults are adding movement to daily routines.

PLYMOUTH, Minn. — Especially during long Minnesota winters with icy conditions, balance training is essential to fall prevention. Maintaining a strong posture, integrating core work and practicing careful, mindful stepping in everyday functions are key.

Moving for Better Balance is an evidence-based, falls-prevention program that uses the principles and movement of Tai Chi to help older adults improve balance, coordination and increase confident movement.

Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese martial art, focuses on slow and controlled movement which improves functional ability to reduce fall-related risks and frequency.

Most most Twin Cities YMCAs offer Tai Chi classes. It is a serene mind body activity that also helps with stress reduction and mental clarity by connecting fully and moving energy. Tai Chi is growing in popularity. For more information about the YMCA classes, click here.
