MINNETONKA, Minn. - Authorities are investigating after a 3-year-old boy was hit and killed by a vehicle Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Smetana Road and Feltl Road.

The driver, an 80-year-old Minnetonka resident, was heading eastbound on Smetana when he struck the child who had darted into traffic.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial investigation indicates the boy, who had been in the care of a family member, was running along the road when he ran into traffic.

"The babysitter was trying to catch this young boy and he turned the corner and went across two lanes of traffic," Minnetonka Police Chief Scott Boerboom says.

The driver is fully cooperating with police. They say drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the incident.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the name of the boy at a later date.

"It's tragic for this young boy, the family, the person driving the car, our officers who arrived and provided first aid, but yeah, it's tragedy all around."
