Attempted sexual assault reported near U of M campus

The victim was able to get away and the suspect fled into the neighborhood.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Police Department responded to an attempted sexual assault Friday morning near the University of Minnesota.

Police said the attempted assault occurred near the 600 block of 8th Street SE at approximately 6:00 a.m.

A student was walking when she was grabbed by the suspect, who attempted to pull her into nearby bushes while he groped her, police said.

The victim was able to get away and the suspect fled into the neighborhood.

No weapons were implied or observed and the victim describes the suspect as male, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, unknown race and age, wearing all black and smelling of cigarettes, police said. 

Staff from the Minneapolis Police Department is distributing flyers to advise the public of the incident and share personal safety messaging.
