WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. — A DHL delivery driver is facing charges after police say he was speeding before a fatal crash on Highway 96 in White Bear Lake in early 2019.

Robert James Norby, 53, of Maple Grove is being charged with criminal vehicular homicide in the fatal crash that took place March 22, 2019.

Norby, who was a new driver for DHL, was speeding, going over 80 miles per hour as he approached the ramps for Interstate 35E, the complaint says.

Officials said Norby failed to brake at a red light, steered around the other vehicles, went onto the shoulder and into the intersection, according to the complaint.

The complaint says Norby collided with a Kia Sportage that was being driven by a 25-year-old man, who was fatally wounded and later pronounced dead at Regions Hospital.

Norby suffered non-life threatening injuries to his wrist and knee.

Police found Norby had been hired as a driver for DHL that week, and that he had his license canceled multiple times due to medical concerns, but his license was valid at the time of the crash, according to the complaint.

The complaint says Norby was not able to tell police what happened during the crash, but he said he did not lose consciousness.

Norby told police he took acetaminophen and seizure medication, according to the complaint.

A blood test did not find any illegal substances in his system, according to the complaint.

Norby is charged with felony criminal vehicular homicide - operating a vehicle in a grossly negligent manner. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
