ST PAUL, Minn. — A group of physicians and medical professionals will hold a forum to discuss their stance on recreational marijuana this Thursday.

The discussion, hosted by the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA), will take place in downtown St. Paul. The purpose its to help MMA develop its policy on the prospect of legalizing recreational marijuana. They don't currently have a policy on the topic.

MMA is inviting physicians and physicians in training to the discussion.

The speakers will include Dr. Darin J. Erickson, an associate professor of epidemiology and community health at the U of M; Dr. Sheila Specker, associate professor of psychiatry and the director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the U of M; and Dr. David Thorson from Entira Family Clinics.

"More and more discussion is taking place in clinics about the drug," said MMA President Doug Wood. "We want to be prepared if legislation to legalize recreational marijuana ever gains traction. Do Minnesota's physicians oppose it? Favor it? Or maybe they're neutral on the issue."

The forum will help the group understand the health effects of marijuana, and what legalization would mean in Minnesota.

The forum takes place Thursday, June 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at 317 Washington Street in downtown St. Paul. Registration is closed, but MMA says walk-ups are welcome.
