BCA releases no-knock warrant data for first time under state law

The BCA's report is the first released since Minnesota legislature required local law enforcement agencies to report information about no-knock warrants to the DPS.

ST PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) released their 2021 no-knock warrant data on Monday, which details all of the warrants requested, executed and denied by Minnesota law enforcement agencies.

The BCA's report is the first since Minnesota legislature passed a statute in 2021 requiring all law enforcement agencies that apply for a no-knock search warrant to report that data within three months of the warrant application. The state statute went into effect on Sept. 1, 2021.

The 2021 report contains data from between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31. The report encompasses the following information:

  • Warrants requested: 132
  • Warrants issued: 129
  • Warrants denied: 3
  • Warrants executed: 105
  • Warrants where the sought evidence was located: 87

The report states the Minneapolis Police Department requested the most no-knock warrants in the state with 44. Thirty-three of these requested warrants were executed by the department.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office requested 16 no-knock warrants between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, the second most out of all Minnesota agencies. Twelve of these warrants were executed.

The BCA also mentioned that their future no-knock search warrant annual reports will contain full-year data.
